memymom - Lisa De Boeck & Marilène Coolens was published by Ludion on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition ‘memymom’ that premiered at Le Musée de la Photographie à Charleroi (September 2018 - January 2019) under the curatorship of Xavier Canonne

memymom is the name used by the artists’ collective and mother-and-daughter team Marilène Coolens and Lisa De Boeck since 2004. The seeds of the project were planted in the 1990s, when the photographer Marilène Coolens was taking snapshots of her growing daughter and had her play out scenes from cartoons, fairy tales and TV shows, in the hope of stimulating Lisa’s imagination. The result was an intimate family archive of analogue photographs, which memymom later collected under the title ‘The Umbilical Vein’. As the daughter grew up, however, the roles began to shift: Lisa became photographer and model, set dresser and director all at once. And Marilène too extended her role and began to appear in the images herself. In the process, they evolved into an artist duo, with the two women now on an equal footing. memymom’s photographs are sensitive images with strong references to theatre and film. Past and present blend in pictures that continue to refer to childhood, but in which youthful innocence has given way to sensuality.

Memymom – samentrekking van ‘me and my mom’ – is de naam waarachter sinds 2004 het kunstenaarscollectief en moeder-dochterstel Marilène Coolens (°1953) en Lisa De Boeck (°1985) schuilgaat. De kiem van dit project ontstaat in de jaren 1990, wanneer fotografe Marilène Coolens kiekjes maakt van haar opgroeiende dochter en haar scènes uit tekenfilms, sprookjes of televisieseries laat uitbeelden, in de hoop zo de verbeelding van de kleine Lisa te stimuleren. Zo ontstaat een intiem familiearchief van analoge foto’s, later door memymom gebundeld onder de noemer ‘The Umbilical Vein’. Maar wanneer de dochter volwassen wordt, beginnen de rollen te verschuiven: Lisa is nu tegelijkertijd fotografe en model, set dresser en regisseur. En ook moeder Marilène breidt haar rol uit door zelf in beeld te verschijnen. Zo zetten ze de stap naar een kunstenaarsduo waarin beide vrouwen evenwaardige posities bekleden. De foto’s van memymom zijn gevoelige beelden met sterke verwijzingen naar theater en film. Het verleden en het heden vermengen zich in foto’s die nog steeds aan de kindertijd refereren, maar waarin de jeugdige onschuld heeft plaatsgemaakt voor sensualiteit.
